CNC Milling Centers

Multi-axis CNC mills for producing complex 3D geometries, pockets, slots, holes, and precision surfaces in metals and plastics.

Water Jet Cutting

For flat metal profiles, plate cutting, and parts that benefit from a cold-cutting process with no heat-affected zone. Handles material up to 8 inches thick.

Laser Cutting

Our 12,000 kW fiber laser with a 5’ x 10’ cutting table handles sheet metal with speed and precision for flat profiles and detailed cutouts.

Tube Laser Cutting

For structural tubing up to 20 feet long and 9 inches in diameter, including square, round, C-channel, and L-shaped profiles.
This combination of subtractive machining and cutting technologies means we can approach your part from multiple angles. If a component is better suited to milling, we mill it. If laser cutting is faster and more cost-effective for a flat profile, we cut it. You get the best process for each part, not just the one process a single-capability shop happens to own.

The Challenge

Apex Avionics Group designs and assembles environmental sensor modules for commercial and military aircraft. Each module consists of a precision-machined aluminum housing, internal mounting brackets, and a set of silicone gaskets that seal the housing against moisture, dust, and pressure changes at altitude.

Apex had been sourcing these components from two separate suppliers: a machine shop in Maryland for the aluminum housings and brackets, and a gasket supplier in Pennsylvania for the silicone seals. The arrangement worked, but it created ongoing coordination problems. Dimensional inconsistencies between the two suppliers meant that roughly 12% of gasket sets didn’t seat properly in the machined housings. That led to rework on the assembly line, delayed deliveries, and increased inspection costs. When Apex needed an engineering change, they had to coordinate revisions with both vendors independently, which added weeks to every design iteration.

Their engineering manager wanted one vendor who could produce both the machined housings and the matching gaskets, ensuring dimensional consistency and eliminating the coordination overhead.

The MAR Solution

Apex found MAR through a recommendation from a fellow aerospace subcontractor in Virginia. After reviewing the part drawings and assembly requirements, our team proposed taking over both the machined components and the gaskets as a single program.

Here’s how we structured the work:

CNC-machined housings

The sensor housings were milled from 6061-T6 aluminum billet on our CNC mills, holding tolerances of ±0.002” on all critical sealing surfaces and mounting features.

CNC-machined brackets

Internal mounting brackets were machined from 303 stainless steel with press-fit features that mated to the aluminum housings.

Water jet-cut gaskets

The silicone gaskets were water jet cut to match the exact sealing geometry of the housings. Because both the housings and gaskets were produced from the same CAD model in the same facility, dimensional alignment was guaranteed.

Kitted shipments

Each order shipped as a complete kit: housings, brackets, and gaskets packaged together, labeled by serial number, and ready for Apex’s assembly line.

We delivered first article samples within two weeks. Apex’s quality team inspected and approved them on the first submission with no dimensional deviations outside of tolerance.
